Whether you’re struggling to sort out your holiday packing, or trying to dry your clothes in time for work, try these top tips for drying clothes fast (no tumble dryer required)
Take them for a spin
If you need to know how to dry clothes quickly, choose the fastest spin cycle on your washing machine. Whether you’ll be drying clothes on the line or on a clothes rack inside, removing as much water as possible before you hang them up will speed up their drying time significantly.
Do the roll
Perhaps the fastest way to dry clothes without a dryer is to use a little hack that involves a clean fluffy towel and some tissue paper. Lay the towel out on a clean surface and cover it with white tissue paper. Put the item you want to dry down flat and then cover it with more tissue paper. Now roll the towel tightly and leave for five minutes: the super-absorbent tissue paper should supercharge the drying time.
Strategic drying
Whether you’re using a clothes horse or a washing line, make sure you shake out garments (particularly jeans) and smooth any creases before hanging them out to dry your clothes faster: crumpled clothes take longer to dry – and to iron. On an airer, your clothes will dry faster if you hang them in order of size, with small items at the bottom: this makes the best use of airflow, encouraging the larger items to dry quicker.
Iron while damp
If your clothes are suitable for ironing, you don’t have to wait until they are completely dry. Ironing damp clothes will dry them off quicker.
